CHEF RUI PAULA - DOC RESTAURANT - RESPONSABLE FOR THE RECEPIES TO QUINTA DO CÔTTO WINES

Rui Paula was born in Bonfim (Porto) in 1967 but it was in the Douro Valley, the birth place of his parents and grandparents, that he went to play on weekends and during the holidays. In 1993 he moved to the village of Alijó and together with his wife Cristina Canelas he opened the Cepa Torta restaurant there which has become a gastronomic reference point in the regions of the Douro and Trás-os-Montes.
In April 2007, in partnership with his brother Pedro and Arisdouro, the operator of the typical Douro sailing barges which they own jointly, he founded the restaurant D.O.C.. It lies midway between Régua and Pinhão, and it sits on stilts above the River Douro. It has breathtaking views of the river and is surrounded by towering terraced vineyards. The restaurant occupies a building of modern design belonging to the Portuguese Maritime Transport Institute. It was designed by architect Miguel Saraiva and it is an integral part of the floating dock of the tiny hamlet of Folgosa
During his professional career Rui Paula has been invited to participate in various events and he has won important prizes including three gold (2005 and 2007) and two silver medals (2001 and 2003) in the “Cooking with Port Wine” competition organised by the Port Wine Institute and by “Inter Magazine”.
In 2008, the restaurant D.O.C. was awarded “The Golden Fork” by the annual review “Good Stay, Good Food”, published by the newspaper “Expresso”, and it was named one of the 10 best restaurants in Portugal.

D.O.C. was also chosen as the Best New Private Project of 2008 by the Portuguese Tourism Institute, who recognised its fundamental role in boosting tourism in the Douro region.
In October 2008 Rui Paula had his first book published, “Rui Paula – Douro Cuisine”. The book is more than just a recipe book. It is full of the images, smells and flavours of the Douro vineyards. It is a book that transports the reader to the World Heritage Site of the Douro, and it underlines the importance of the area in the soul of Rui Paula’s cooking.

“Rui Paula – Douro Cuisine” won two prizes in London in the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards, in the categories Best Cookbook Photography and Best First Cookbook.
